A pair of Brera wall lamps designed by Achille Castiglioni in 1992 for Flos. The pair form part of a series of lamps that Castiglioni created for a wide range of applications and takes its name from the Italian Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca’s Pala dei Montefeltro which is housed in the Pinacoteca di Brera of Milan. Castiglioni’s Brera so perfectly replicated the ostrich egg hanging from the domed shell apse in Piero della Francesca’s work that the museum even hung the lamp in front of the painting to illuminate it.
The lamps are composed of an ovoid diffuser in satin etched glass with a metal supporting arm finished in an anthracite tone. The diffuser is divided into two parts with the lower cup composed of an opal polycarbonate to help cool the lamp while still keeping the purity of the form. More information on the Brera, as well as a full catalogue of all Castiglioni’s works and projects, can be viewed at La Fondazione Achille Castiglioni.
The lamps are in good condition and perfect working order. There is a small crack on the central stem of the lamp holder on one of the lamps but this is not visible once the diffuser is put in place, and does not affect the structural integrity of the lamp. The sale does not include the two E27 light bulbs.
